Key concepts of the IB Primary Years Programme

CONCEPTS:

These are key and relevant ideas that students need to explore and revisit in order to develop a deep and coherent understanding.
There are 7 key concepts that are worked on from kindergarten to 6th grade.

Form:

What is it like?
Understanding that everything has a form with recognizable characteristics that can be observed, identified, described, and classified.

Function:

How does it work?
Understanding that everything has a purpose, a role, or a way of behaving that can be studied.

Causality:

Why is it this way?
Understanding that things do not happen by chance, that there are cause-and-effect relationships, and that actions have consequences.

Change:

How does it change?
Understanding that change is a process involving a shift from one state to another. It is universal and inevitable.

Connection:

How is it related to other things?
Understanding that we live in a world of interactive systems, where the actions of each element affect others.

Perspective:

What are the different viewpoints?
Understanding that knowledge is influenced by perspectives; that different perspectives lead to different interpretations, understandings, and discoveries; and that perspectives can be individual, collective, cultural, or disciplinary.

Responsibility:

What is our responsibility?
Understanding that people make choices based on what they understand, and that the resulting actions can bring about change.
