IB elementary Years Program transdisciplinary themes

The starting points for the students’ research are the knowledge and content of the ministerial programs, but learned through the big questions that human beings ask themselves . These questions are addressed in a meaningful and relevant context that leads students to explore them, taking into account their previous experiences and their prior understanding. There are 4 transdisciplinary themes that are worked on in kindergarten, two of which are privileged. The other two are chosen by the teacher.

Who we are

Research into identity as individuals and as members of a community, through :
  • Physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being;
  • Relationships and a sense of belonging ;
  • Learning and development.

How do we express ourselves?

Research into the diversity of voices, perspectives and expression, through :

  • Inspiration, imagination and creativity;
  • Personal, social and cultural communication practices and modes ;
  • Intentions, perceptions, interpretations and reactions.

There are 6 transdisciplinary themes that are worked on from grade 1 to grade 6.

Where are we in space and time?

An investigation of stories and orientation in place, space and time, through :
  • Periods, events and artifacts ;
  • Communities, heritage, culture and environment;
  • Natural and human factors of movement, adaptation and transformation.

How do we express ourselves?

Research into the diversity of voices, perspectives and expression, through :
  • Inspiration, imagination and creativity;
  • Personal, social and cultural communication practices and modes ;
  • Intentions, perceptions, interpretations and reactions.

How does the world work?

Research into understanding the world and phenomena, through :
  • Models, cycles and systems ;
  • The various tools, practices and methods ;
  • The possibilities and consequences of discovery, design and innovation.

How do we organize ourselves?

Research into systems, structures and networks, through :
  • Interactions within and between social and ecological systems ;
  • The intended and unintended consequences of livelihoods and business practices;
  • Representation, collaboration and decision-making.

Sharing the planet

An investigation into the interdependence between the human and natural worlds, through :
  • The rights, responsibilities and dignity of all ;
  • Paths to a just, peaceful and rethought future;
  • Nature, complexity, coexistence and wisdom.
